There’s no single answer, because every home uses its floor differently. A quiet two-person condo and a busy landed home with kids and pets wear marble at very different speeds. Here’s how to judge what your floor needs.
What affects how fast marble wears
- Foot traffic: more people and more visitors mean faster wear
- Outdoor grit: sand and dust carried in on shoes act like sandpaper
- Kids and pets: toys, claws and spills add scratches and etch marks
- Cleaning products: acidic or harsh cleaners dull the surface quickly
- Location in the home: entrances, corridors and kitchens wear first
A rough guide
| Your home | Light buff | Full grinding and polishing |
|---|---|---|
| Low traffic, careful cleaning | Occasionally, when it looks dull | Only when scratches build up |
| Average family home | Around once a year | Every few years |
| High traffic, kids or pets | More often in busy areas | When scratches or uneven tiles appear |
This is a guide, not a rule. The best signal is the floor itself. For the difference between the two treatments, see diamond grinding vs buffing.
Signs it’s time
- The shine is gone in walkways but still there under furniture
- Light reflections look patchy or hazy
- You can see fine scratches when light hits at an angle
- Water no longer beads up, which means the sealer has worn off
Daily habits that keep the shine longer
- Put doormats at every entrance
- Sweep or vacuum before mopping, so grit isn’t dragged across the floor
- Mop with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and wring the mop well
- Wipe spills straight away, especially juice, sauces and wine
- Add felt pads under chairs and table legs
