A crack across your marble floor or a chipped corner can feel like the end of a beautiful floor. Often it isn’t. Many cracks and chips can be repaired so well that you’ll struggle to find them afterwards.
Types of damage and what can be done
| Damage | Usually repairable? | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hairline cracks | Yes | Filled with colour-matched resin, then ground and polished |
| Chipped edges and corners | Yes | Built up with tinted filler, then shaped and polished |
| Pits and small holes | Yes | Filled and polished flush |
| Hollow-sounding tiles | Sometimes | Re-bonded, or lifted and re-laid |
| Large cracks across many tiles | Needs checking | The cause must be found before repairing |
How repairs are made to blend in
The key is colour matching. The filler is tinted to match the stone’s base colour and veining. Once it hardens, the area is ground flat and polished with the rest of the floor, so the shine is even across the repair. Learn more about marble gum filling.
That’s why repairs usually look best when done together with a full polish.
Hollow tiles: the hidden problem
Tap a tile lightly with a coin or your knuckle. A dull, hollow sound means it may have come loose from the floor underneath. Hollow tiles are more likely to crack under weight, so it’s worth fixing them early.
When repair isn’t enough
- A tile is shattered into several loose pieces
- Cracks keep spreading or reappear after repair
- Many tiles crack in a straight line, which can point to movement below the floor
Replacing a single marble tile is possible, but finding an exact match is hard, because natural stone varies from batch to batch.
What to avoid
- Don’t use superglue or general-purpose fillers. They discolour and are hard to remove later
- Don’t keep walking heavy loads over a hollow or cracked tile
- Don’t wait too long: small cracks are quicker and cheaper to fix
